Three things I love and three things I hate about being an entrepreneur

Being an entrepreneur is a life full of highs and lows. Some days you wake up and you do not want to get out of bed and face the world (but you do anyway) other times you bounce out of bed full with unbridled excitement. However, when all things are considered, I think being an entrepreneur is one of the best jobs in the world.

Things I love about being an entrepreneur:

  • You are in control of your own destiny–It’s exciting, rewarding, fun and sometime scary knowing that the buck stops with you. Having the ability to forge your own path and push your own boundaries gives you a sense of freedom and purpose.
  • Every day is different– A lot of people are stuck living in the past or focussing on the future. Being an entrepreneur you really live in the here and now. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities. Whilst you may plan and strategise for the future you can only really control what happens now.
  • People– Being an entrepreneur allows you to meet and work with some amazing people. Finding good people and allowing them to flourish and grow is incredibly rewarding. Most of the senior people in my business have started in entry level jobs but have proved themselves and become amazing colleagues.

Things I hate about being an entrepreneur:

  • The work life balance – Whilst I think I have it better than most, I never really stop strategizing and thinking about the business. Being constantly on call and checking emails all the time can impact on personal and family time. I am regularly being chastised by my better half for checking my emails or phone in the evenings and weekends.
  • Overnight success – Alot of people you meetpresume that you were an overnight success and think that it was easy for you. This could not be further from the truth, I remember the early years when I had to win the business, complete the work and try and have time for my family. It takes time to build systems, infrastructure and a customer base.
  • Conversation – This is a strange one and the main reason I joined Entrepreneurs Organisation. I am pretty obsessed with business and strategy, I enjoy talking about my plans and learnings with likeminded people. I am however very aware that for most people, talk about making payroll, staff issues and strategy is so far removed from them that they have no interest whatsoever. I am very conscious when chatting with non-entrepreneur friends to keep the business talk to a minimum.

Overall I am lucky, I love what I do and have smart people around me who love doing the things I dislike doing! Being an entrepreneur has given me opportunities and experiences I never thought I would get in million years (relaxing with Richard Branson on his private Island, partying at the Playboy Mansion and nearly getting stuck in Tijuana with the wrong passport!).
